7- card stud poker III

September 19th, 2008

In a game of 7-card stud poker, there is an idea of burn card that comes into play. A burn card is a playing card which is rejected by the players and remain unused throughout the course of the hand. Often practiced to prevent cheating in games, the game of 7-card stud poker has a burn card dealt in each of the Fourth Street, Fifth Street, turn and river rounds. It is interesting that with eight participants in the game and four discarded cards in the form of burn cards, the total number of cards that should come into play is 60 while a standard deck has only 52 cards. However, since players continually fold their hands with each betting round, the shortage of cards is never an issue.

When the 7-card stud poker game is not being played in casinos for high stakes, but is played at family and the stakes are low, there is a possibility no player will want to fold his hand. That is why in the home game version of 7-card stud poker, seven and not eight players participate. In case, all the cards in the deck are finished, a burn card which was earlier dealt and went out of play can be dealt again either to help complete dealing or as a burn card again. If even this does not help, the shortage of cards can be resolved by introducing a variation in the gameplay and instead of dealing each player a separate hole card in the final round, a lone community card can be used by each player as his seventh and final card. An important distinction between draw poker and 7-card stud poker is that in the latter case since there are four up cards revealed even before showdown, this allows players to make tactical decisions about the game and give themselves the edge to win.
